10 Tips for New Harley-Davidson Riders
If you are new to the Harley-Davidson® family, then you have yet to learn all the tricks that more seasoned tour riders have picked up over the years. (1) There is no right way to do things, but since several riders have offered their advice, Adamec Harley-Davidson® wanted to share these 10 travel tips below. After all, experience is the best teacher. (1)
1. Start with a plan
If you already know your destination, then we suggest taking a look at the Official H-D® Ride Planner. (2) The app allows riders to find dealers, motorcycle events, gas stations, hotels and more. You can also download rides created by others to select the best roads for your trip. (3)
2. Make a list
Once you know where you are headed, make a checklist. When this task is complete, experienced tour riders suggest putting everything you intend to bring on your trip into a pile on the floor. Remove the least essential items until the pile is both manageable and pack-able. You can visit our Harley-Davidson® dealers in Jacksonville if you are missing any important gear. (1)
3. Pack the right type of clothes
Keep in mind that lightweight synthetic clothing like T-shirts and underwear can be quickly washed in a hotel sink and left to dry overnight whereas cotton fabrics will require more time. (1)
4. Save on space
Don’t fold your clothes as it may take up too much space. Instead, try rolling them. (1)
5. Use zipper-lock plastic bags
These types of plastic bags vary in size and are incredibly useful when trying to organize your stuff in saddlebags and duffle bags. They help keep your items organized, which means that you save time looking for and retrieving certain items. (1)
6. Be prepared for cold and rain
Seasoned riders suggest packing your cold weather and rain gear regardless of the season or weather forecast for your trip. (1)
7. Where to put your weight
When readying your motorcycle for your trip, riders suggest keeping as much weight as possible low and toward the tank, which is the bike’s center of gravity. Also, be sure to evenly distribute the weight on each side. (1)
8. Check the cargo weight limits of your bike
This limit includes your bags and racks. Harley-Davidson® riders also advise adjusting the tire pressure and suspension accordingly. Whenever possible, lighter is always better. (1)
9. Take a test run
Pack up your bike and go for a short ride at least one or two days before you leave. This will give you time to adjust the load as needed so as to avoid problems during your trip. (1)
10. Check the headlamp
Your journey may be short or long. Whatever the case, you will want to check your bike’s headlamp to ensure that it is properly aimed before driving toward the open road. (1)
When it comes to road trips, many feel that it is more about what you leave behind than what you take. For more tips and information, visit Adamec Harley-Davidson® today. (1)
