Harley-Davidson® Electric Line

By now, you’ve probably heard all about Project LiveWire: the Milwaukee-based motorcycle maker's first-ever fully-electric bike. We have mentioned the prototype a couple of times via Adamec Harley-Davidson® blogs, but it seems we are due for another update — specifically concerning model availability. (1)

Recap

Last we discussed Harley®’s electrified model, the bike was making its way around the U.S. and other countries — including Canada — where it was seen on display at the 2015 Montreal Motorcycle Show. (1)

The LiveWire was on display being “tested” by automotive journalists and motorcycle enthusiasts via a Jumpstart demonstration platform, where several people discovered just how exciting the bike really is, considering how different it is (style, sound, motor) from the rest of H-D®’s collection. (1)

With a three-phase AC electric induction motor, 74 horses on tap, and 52 pound-feet of torque available to the rider, the LiveWire’s top speed is a grin-inducing 92 miles per hour. What’s more, acceleration from zero-to-60 is accomplished in under four seconds — a real adrenaline rush. (1)

Updates

Harley® is now working on the cost and range of its new bike before putting it on the market. According to The Verge, the company's prototypes can manage a range of about 50 miles before recharge. That number probably needs to double before motorcycle enthusiasts will be willing to purchase the model. Harley® is working hard to make the necessary changes. (2)

Cost is also something the bike maker is considering, as customers are willing to pay approximately $20,000. The Verge says some companies are charging slightly less for their electric motorcycle, while others are asking for more than $20K (but under $26K). (2)

However, these other manufacturer’s are not Harley-Davidson®. And its innovative bike, although mighty different from its siblings in the lineup, still derives from a motorcycle maker with over a century of history and expertise in creating rebellious and adventure-worthy two-wheel models. (2)

Availability

When can you get your hands on a LiveWire model? According Fortune.com, Harley® CEO Matt Levatich suggests that the motorcycle will be made available sometime before or by 2020. The company appears to be waiting for improvements in battery technology. (3)

Harley-Davidson® seems to be taking its time to ensure that its new model will meet our expectations, and considering the company is open to customer feedback, we have no doubt that Project LiveWire will be worth the wait. (3)
